Rex Botengan
Mr. Rex Botengan has been very active in Igorot activities in the Philippines and outside. During his college days, he was the president of the Baguio Tech (now University of Baguio) BIBAK and secretary general of the BIBAK Central Organization of Baguio. When the family migrated to Los Angeles, California, he was an active member of BIBAK Los Angeles. In 1992 he founded the Igorot Quarterly and became its editor. He was the lead organizer of the Igorot International Consultation-1 (IIC-1) in 1995. He was also the lead organizer of the Igorot Global Organization (IGO) in 1995 and became its first president when it was formally organized in 2000.
Aside from his BIBAK activities abroad, he was the lead organizer of the St. Benedict’s Mission, which started as an Igorot congregation and became a regular multi-cultural congregation.
He was born in Besao, Mountain Province to Eusebio Buking Botengan and Lila Gayno. He finished his secondary education at the La Trinidad Agricultural High School and his degree in secondary education at the Adamson University.
He taught at the Lepanto High School in 1957 where he met his wife, Janet Catanes. He transferred to the Mountain Provincial High School in 1959. He left the public schools in 1960 to become the principal of All Saints Mission in Bontoc, Mountain Province while serving as supervisor of the Episcopal Mission Schools in the Philippines. In 1964, he became the principal of the Easter High School. He resigned in 1968 because his family migrated to the USA.
Janet Catanes is from Kapangan, Benguet. Rex and Janet have three children and two grandchildren.
