STATEMENT OF RECOGNITION AND REMEMBRANCE

July 30, 2026

Ghent, Belgium

We, the Cordillera Community in Belgium (Cordi-Bel, asbl), stand in solemn solidarity with the global community on this historic day of dual convergence. Today, we formally acknowledge and honor two monumental declarations that bridge international human rights policy with our indigenous ancestral history.

The Declarations We Honor Today

  • The United Nations General Assembly Resolution: Designating July 30 as the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, mobilizing global action against modern human exploitation.

  • The Mountain Province Provincial Declaration: Inaugurating July 30 as “Timicheg Day Against Trafficking in Persons,” anchoring this global fight to the historical memory of our ancestors.

Our Purpose and Pledge

At the entrance of the Timicheg Tunnel at the Gent-Sint-Pieters train station, we gathered for a commemorative service and laid a wreath on July 25 to fulfill a sacred duty. We recognize that humanity’s moral progress depends entirely on our willingness to confront historical realities. As Igorots living in Europe, we accept the responsibility of preserving our history to ensure human trafficking is actively confronted and rooted out.

We express our deepest gratitude to the City Government of Ghent for naming this tunnel after Timicheg, our Igorot ancestor who suffered in the 1913 Ghent human zoo. By dedicating this infrastructure to his memory, Belgium has turned a site of historical trauma into a monument of remembrance, education, and cultural reconciliation.

This gesture symbolizes our enduring respect for those who came before us and our active pledge to fight modern human trafficking. In alignment with the UN International Day of Friendship, we offer this statement as a bridge between cultures and a call for ongoing global renewal.

May July 30 endure forever as a day of remembrance, justice, and action.
