ChiCo Speech during 30th Anniversary of Cordillera Community in Belgium

Being part of the Cordillera Community in Belgium (Cordi-Bel) has helped us deepen our Igorot identity as a second-generation Igorot in several meaningful ways. For some of us growing up in Belgium, we did not experience everyday life in the Cordillera, so our understanding of our heritage mainly came from our family. Through Cordi-Bel, we had the opportunity to connect with other Igorots who share similar backgrounds and experiences, making us feel that we belong to a larger community.

The community has introduced us to Igorot traditions, values, and cultural practices through events, celebrations, and performances. By participating in activities such as traditional dances, music, and community gatherings, we have gained a deeper appreciation of our cultural roots and the significance of preserving them. These experiences have allowed us to learn not only about the culture itself but also about the history and resilience of our people and ancestors.

Cordi-Bel has also given us the chance to interact with first-generation Igorots and elders who willingly share their stories, experiences, and knowledge. Listening to them has helped us understand the values of respect, community, and cultural pride that are central to being Igorot. Their guidance has strengthened the connection to our heritage despite the fact that most of us have grown up outside the Philippines.
